Payment Threshold
The minimum earnings balance a publisher must reach before receiving a payout from an ad network.
What is a Payment Threshold?
A payment threshold is the minimum amount of accumulated earnings a publisher must reach before an ad network will issue a payment. Until your earnings balance crosses this threshold, your revenue remains in the network's system. Once the threshold is met, the payment is processed according to the network's payment terms (Net-30, Net-60, etc.).
Common thresholds include: Google AdSense at $100, Mediavine at $25, Ezoic at $20, and many smaller networks at $50-$100. Some networks allow publishers to set their own threshold above the minimum, accumulating larger but less frequent payments to reduce transaction fees.
Why It Matters for Publishers
Payment thresholds are particularly important for new or small publishers with limited traffic. If your site earns $30 per month and your network has a $100 threshold, you won't receive your first payment until month four. This can be discouraging and creates cash flow challenges during the critical early growth phase.
When evaluating ad networks, the payment threshold should be weighed alongside RPM performance and payment terms. A network with slightly lower RPMs but a $25 threshold might be preferable for a small publisher compared to a higher-paying network with a $100 threshold that takes months to reach.
Tips for Optimization
- Choose networks with low thresholds when starting: If your site earns under $100/month, prioritize networks with $20-25 thresholds to receive more frequent payments.
- Consolidate once you scale: As traffic grows and threshold amounts become less relevant, you can consolidate to fewer, higher-paying networks regardless of their threshold levels.
- Avoid threshold-chasing behavior: Don't compromise on traffic quality or user experience to reach thresholds faster. Sustainable growth is more valuable than rushing to a single payment.
- Set up payment methods early: Configure your payment method and tax information as soon as you join a network. Missing information can delay payments even after you've reached the threshold.
