E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)
Google's quality framework evaluating content creators' credibility and the trustworthiness of content.
What is E-E-A-T?
E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It is a framework from Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines used by human quality raters to evaluate content and websites. While E-E-A-T is not a direct ranking algorithm, the signals it identifies influence how Google's algorithms evaluate and rank content. Google added "Experience" (the first E) in December 2022, emphasizing the value of first-hand, practical experience in content creation.
E-E-A-T is especially important for "YMYL" (Your Money or Your Life) topics — content that could impact a person's health, financial stability, safety, or well-being. Financial advice, medical information, legal guidance, and news reporting are held to the highest E-E-A-T standards.
Why It Matters for Publishers
E-E-A-T directly impacts organic search visibility, which is the primary traffic source for most publishers. Sites that demonstrate strong E-E-A-T signals tend to rank higher, attract more organic traffic, and consequently earn more ad revenue. Conversely, sites perceived as low-E-E-A-T may see their rankings decline, especially after Google's Helpful Content Updates.
For ad-supported publishers, E-E-A-T also affects advertiser confidence and CPMs. Premium advertisers prefer placing ads on authoritative, trustworthy sites. Strong E-E-A-T signals can unlock higher-paying programmatic deals and attract direct advertiser interest.
Tips for Optimization
- Showcase author expertise: Create detailed author bio pages that highlight credentials, experience, and other publications. Link author pages to articles and to professional profiles.
- Demonstrate first-hand experience: Include original photography, personal anecdotes, and specific details that show authors have direct experience with the topics they write about.
- Build authoritative backlinks: Earn links from reputable sites in your niche. Being cited by established authorities signals to Google that your content is trustworthy and valuable.
- Maintain transparent practices: Clear editorial policies, corrections processes, disclosure statements, and about pages all signal trustworthiness to both users and quality raters.
- Keep content updated: Regularly review and update existing content to maintain accuracy. Outdated information, especially in YMYL topics, damages E-E-A-T perception.
